Iran pilot slams Western sanctions

“According to article two of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights, everyone is entitled to all rights and freedom set forth in the declaration without distinction of any kind. No distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs,” the Iranian pilot, Captain Hooshang Shahbazi, told a Press TV correspondent in Geneva.

He said that the sanctions imposed by the Western countries on Iran’s civilian airlines have resulted in dilapidated aircraft parts, leading to technical failures.

The sanctions have caused “a considerable number of plane crashes and have led to the death of hundreds of passengers which, according to the Aviation statistics, is above the average death toll from such unfortunate accidents in the world,” he added.

The pilot is in Geneva to speak out against the Western sanctions against Iran’s civilian aviation as the 19th Human Rights council meeting continues.

The famed Iranian pilot succeeded in a brave move to land his Iran Air Boeing 727 aircraft, with 94 passengers and 19 crew members on board, while the plane’s front landing gear jammed during the landing approach to a Tehran airport on October 18, 2011.

He kept the nose of the aircraft off the ground as the flight from Moscow sped down the runway at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport until it came to a safe halt.
