Iran stages ‘Hafez’ puppet opera

Hafez is now on stage at Tehran’s Ferdowsi Hall presented by Aran Theater Troupe accompanied by a team of about 30 vocalist led by Alireza Qorbani.

I started writing Hafez puppet opera three years ago and tried to make it different from all my previous works, Gharibpour told Fars News Agency.

I was very inspired by the Persian Passion Play (Ta’zieh) in writing this opera and used it for different roles, he added.

The Persian Passion Play which is a ritual dramatic art that recounts religious events, historical and mythical stories and folk tales through poetry, music, song and motion.

Behrouz Gharibpour is considered one of the pioneers of traditional Persian puppet theatre, known for his extensive research on Qajar puppetry. Macbeth and Rostam and Sohrab are among his better-known works.

Gharibpour has staged his Qajar style puppet play with Aran Puppet Theater Group in numerous domestic and foreign festivals.
