‘Iran to continue cooperation with IAEA’

“We are ready to remove all the ambiguities and prove to the whole world that our nuclear activities are exclusive[ly] for peaceful purposes and none of these allegations are true,” said Ali Asghar Soltanieh in reference to the claims by the United States and some of its allies that Tehran’s nuclear energy program may have a military component.

He made the remarks after an eight-hour meeting with IAEA’s Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards Herman Nackaerts in Vienna on Friday.

“But we need time and patience and quiet environment. Therefore, I request and appeal to all to let the agency and Iran do their work wisely,” he added.

During the session, Iran and the IAEA agreed to convene fresh rounds of talks, but the venue and date of the meetings will be decided later, Soltanieh pointed out.

The Friday discussions revolved around preparing an agreement to determine the modality of the IAEA’s inspection of Iran’s Parchin military site.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly rejected reports about nuclear activity taking place at Parchin and argued that a mutually agreed framework will have to be worked out before the IAEA inspectors are allowed to visit the site.

Soltanieh said Tehran put forward a number of proposals during the meeting to make the text of the agreement more balanced, adding that Iran wants matters to go forward smoothly.

Although Iran’s envoy said that everything was on the right track, Nackaerts believed that no progress was made in the talks.

On May 25, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano released his latest report on Iran, confirming that there are no diversions in the country’s nuclear energy activities toward weaponization.

Amano’s report was issued after his talks with senior Iranian officials in Tehran on May 21.

Following his visit to Iran, the IAEA chief said Iran and the agency made a decision to reach an agreement aimed at resolving issues related to the country’s nuclear energy program.
