Iraqi Kurdistan censured for ‘arms deal’

The official, whose name has not been mentioned in the reports, accused the president of the Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani, on Sunday of secretly buying a large supply of heavy munitions from a foreign country.

The arms included anti-tank missiles and large quantities of heavy weapons.

The official also said that Iraqi authorities have “all the documents” on the deal, stating that the move was a violation of Iraq’s constitution.

The issue of the recent arms deal is not the only matter of dispute between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan region.

On July 28, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki also censured the Kurdish authorities and said their move to prevent the deployment of Iraqi government forces to the border with Syria is a clear violation of the country’s laws and security measures.

He made the criticism after an Iraqi army brigade was prevented from reaching the disputed Zummer area on Wednesday.

The Iraqi premier also urged the regional government of Kurdistan to respect law and order.

The Iraqi government and the Kurdish region have also been engaged in a dispute over oil exports in the past few months.

On July 15, Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh warned Ankara against the “illegal” imports of oil from Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

“Turkey must stop the unauthorized export of oil through its land,” Dabbagh said in a statement.
