ISIS emerged under US watch in Afghanistan: Hamid Karzai

nsnbc : Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has implied that U.S. armed forces are directly aiding the Islamic State in Afghanistan (ISIS-K), among others with weapons and logistics.

Hamid Karzai_Afghanistan_2017_archivesSpeaking to reporters the former Afghan president who came to power as “Washington’s man in Kabul” after the U.S. and allies had ousted the Taliban regime, said:

“I have seen the Afghan people come to me and tell me how the ISIS or Daesh are supplied with helicopters, how unmarked non-military color helicopters supply these people, not only in one part of the country but in many parts of Afghanistan.”

Speaking about the continued presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan Karzai said:

“The US came to Afghanistan to bring peace and stability and defeat extremism yet we have more of it today. Why? That is what we should be discussing. … Clearly bombings, killings, prisons and the harassment of people in Afghanistan have not worked. … Who did this under the watch of US intelligence and military in Afghanistan and how come? We have the right to ask these questions and the US government must answer.”

Karzai also stressed that he hoped that neighboring Pakistan could recognize that it was used by the United States against Afghanistan, for a purpose that had noting to do with humanism or humanitarianism, and that this had been the case since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Karzai was silent about the Soviet “regime change assassination” – and invasion of Afghanistan as a major destabilizing factor.

However, Karzai added that now the United States, under President Donald Trump’s new South Asia policy, is doing the same as Pakistan to “prevent integration and economic development in this region”. Announcing his South Asia policy in August, Trump had called for greater troop deployment and Indian involvement in Afghanistan. The US president had also lambasted Pakistan for offering safe havens to “agents of chaos”.

Karzai added that the common point between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding Trump’s policy was that both countries recognize it will not help matters in Afghanistan. “We don’t want to be tools in big games where we get stepped on for the objectives of others,” Karzai said. “Pakistan did the same to us, but we do not want to do this to Pakistan.” Karzai said that Afghanistan wants to “extend a hand of friendship to Pakistan and join hands with the region to salvage ourselves from this conspiracy.”

Pakistan has since the India – Pakistan war in 1965 perceived a politically unstable and militarily weak Afghanistan as necessary strategic depth for the case of another major military conflict with India.

For the United States a controlled chaos can serve as a pretext for upholding the deployment of U.S. and allied troops in Afghanistan – a country that is not only rich in resources.

Afghanistan is part of a key energy corridor, of great importance for Beijing’s road and belt initiative or new silk road. It’s location also allows the U.S. to attempt to minimize the influence of Iranian proxies, Russian proxies and Pakistani proxies. Carefully balanced support of ISIS-K to achieve political and strategic objectives in Afghanistan would not be inconsistent with U.S. policy elsewhere.
