Islamist militants ‘tried to kidnap Jewish judge’

The group, some of whom are members of suspected extremist group Forsane
Alizza that was banned last month, are accused of “being part of a
criminal gang connected to a terrorist enterprise” – a crime that
carries a maximum ten year prison term.

Paris prosecutor François Molins said Forsane Alizza members received physical
training in parks and forests around Paris and religious indoctrination “in
order to take part in a jihad,” or holy war. The group preached hate
and violence on their internet site, which “called for an Islamic
caliphate in France, the application of the Shariah and incited Muslims to
unite to prepare for civil war”.

The site, which also showed clips of late al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, has
been shut down.

There was no link between the arrests and the Merah murders, Mr Molins
insisted.

President Nicolas Sarkozy said yesterday that there is now “zero tolerance”
for hate speech and ideologies that fail to conform with French values.

“You will see that in the weeks to come we will continue this absolutely
systematic work of assuring the protection of the French by not tolerating
such activities,” he said.

France expelled two foreign-born radical Islamists on Monday. Two imams from
Saudi Arabia and Turkey and a suspected Tunisian militant are also expected
to be expelled, with more to follow, officials said.

With French presidential elections just three weeks away, rival candidates’
camps yesterday accused Mr Sarkozy of timing the arrests for political gain.
