It’s Time We Call American Breakfast What It Really Is: Dessert (Infographic)

Many consider breakfast to be their favourite meal of the day, and for good reason. Whether it be the eggs, the bacon, the muffins, or the pancakes that make your mouth salivate the most, it’s an often tasty meal that sets us up for success throughout the day.

While the infamous adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day remains up for debate (perspective one | perspective two), the importance of making that meal healthy, should you choose to partake, is undeniable.

And so I was happy to come across an infographic created by Javier Zarracina at Vox which visually breaks down some of the most common breakfast options Americans both love and regularly consume.

The graphic partners each common breakfast option with a comparable dessert — measuring both sugar content and total calories — and calls into question the notion that these foods are appropriate choices to start our day with.

I doubt that there are many of us who see a couple of scoops of french vanilla ice cream or an Oh Henry bar as a viable breakfast option. But I’m sure that there are plenty of us with no qualms about starting our day with either a serving of Chobani greek yogurt or a Nature Valley granola bar.

This graphic, however, suggests that those secondary and commonly accepted options may be just as bad for our health.

Whether you see breakfast as the most important meal of the day or not, it’s essential that we all become informed consumers about everything that we eat. While yogurt or granola bars may sound like sensible options, taking the time to actually read the labels may prove otherwise.

Another great gauge that I myself use is to observe your body’s reaction to food after you consume it. The more I took the time to do this, the more I not only connected with the workings of my body, but also identified what foods bothered my system the most.

Questions to ask yourself include:

  • How does my stomach feel?
  • Is my stomach swollen or bloated?
  • How has my energy level changed since eating?

Since establishing this inner checklist I’ve developed a diet that better works for my body, and have also found myself making more time to prepare my own meals, knowing they generally agree with my body more.
