In one incident, she approached the mother of a three-month-old baby girl in a
children’s goods store in Ashikaga and complimented her on the child before
asking if she could hold her.
Saotome held the baby for around five minutes, during which she broke both of
her thigh bones, before returning her to the mother, who subsequently took
her to hospital as she would not stop crying.
Following her arrest, according to AP reports at the time, she is believed to
have told police investigators: “I wanted to hurt the baby.”
Sentencing Saotome for the attacks, a judge reportedly described her behaviour
as “despicable” and the court refused to excuse her on the grounds
of temporary insanity.
