Actress and mother Jessica Capshaw has joined the ranks of Christina Applegate, Maya Rudolph, and Julianne Moore in working with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Moms Clean Air Force.
In a new video shot for the group, the Grey’s Anatomy star asks moms and dads to protect a set of historic new rules, the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which will prevent 90 percent of the toxic mercury in coal burned by power plants from being emitted into the air.
These limits are required under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, but they have already been delayed for more than twenty years, and continue to face political resistance.
And now, just after these standards for power plants were published in the Federal Register, Senator James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) filed a Congressional Review Act that could not only kill the new Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, but make it impossible for the EPA to ever issue another such rule.
Capshaw says, “I’ve joined Moms Clean Air Force to send a powerful message to Washington that there’s only one way to keep poisons out of the air we breathe–and that’s to create strong protections.” Capshaw continues, “It’s time to let our political representatives know that they bear a moral responsibility for cleaning poisons out of our air.”
Moms Clean Air Force notes that there are numerous other ways in which Congress can foil the new standards. Senator Manchin of West Virginia has introduced the Fair Compliance Act in another effort to delay implementation–even though leading utility executives have said that they have had plenty of time to come into compliance, and have done so.
“Moms and dads have love, enormous love,” says Capshaw, “and if we raise our voices together we can stop toxic air pollution, but we have to act.”
