Jordan may take up Saudi UNSC seat

A UN diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday that Jordan was reluctant to take the seat but Saudi Arabia persuaded Amman to replace Riyadh in the 15-nation UN body.

According to one of the diplomats, Jordan’s Ambassador to the UN Prince Zeid al-Hussein returned to his country on Thursday night to discuss Amman’s new role on the Council. The two-year term will begin in January 2014.

“Jordan came under a lot of pressure to take the seat,” said a second diplomatic source. However, Jordanian diplomats have made no immediate comment on the report.

On October 18, Saudi Arabia rejected its seat on the Security Council one day after winning it, arguing that the international body is incapable of ending wars and resolving conflicts.

The kingdom claimed the mechanisms and double standards in the Security Council prevent it from carrying out its duties in maintaining world peace, and that Riyadh was seeking a more active role on Syria in key international bodies.

The election of Saudi Arabia came despite criticism from advocacy groups that the country’s record on human rights, especially women’s rights, is abysmal.

The Al Saud regime has been among the major supporters of Takfiri groups operating in Syria since March 2011. The kingdom has also assisted Bahrain in its continued crackdown on protests in the country.
