INDEPENDENT MP Bob Katter described his daughter as the “Pollyanna” of the family in a spirited defence after she was yesterday found guilty of assaulting her daughter’s teacher.

Caroline Annette Coupland will not have a conviction recorded against her with magistrate Ellen Skinner acknowledging the case against her in North Sydney Local Court was “trivial”.

Mrs Coupland was found to have pushed Brooke Anderson at the exclusive Sally’s Place centre in Mosman in December last year.

Ms Anderson, who no longer works at the $150-a-day centre, said in her evidence that she told Mrs Coupland her three children could no longer attend the school after an incident at show and tell.

One of the girls had brought a headache tablet to school for show and tell, which went against school policy, the court heard.

But Mrs Coupland suggested at the hearing that the school had wanted to get rid of her family because her daughter has the genetic disorder Williams syndrome – an allegation that her famous father agreed with in a statement released after the court’s decision.

“If people in Sydney are wondering why they can’t get police to attend burglaries, perhaps it’s because they’re busy doing the bidding of kindergarten owners who drive Porsches and Mercedes and expel little girls with Williams syndrome from their kindergarten,” Mr Katter said. “One must reflect on a system that has wasted maybe $100,000 of taxpayers’ money over what was, at worst, a shouting match between two women.

“(Caroline) is the Pollyanna of our family, a very gentle person, but we are very proud she did her best not to accept that her child should be pushed out of kindy.

“Everyone close to this case knew what this was really about – except, it seems, for those who brought such a trivial and vexatious matter before the court.”

Ms Skinner said that while the assault came “at the lowest end of the scale”, Mrs Coupland had to be accountable for her behaviour.

“This is a very unpleasant thing to occur to someone in the course of their employment,” she said.

She noted Mrs Coupland’s “impeccable character” and said no conviction would be recorded against the ASIC lawyer provided that she abides by a 12-month good behaviour bond.
