Keep fighting for justice: Garner’s widow

The widow of Eric Garner, unarmed African-American killed by a white police officer, has called on the protesters to “keep fighting” for justice to be served.

At National Action Network in Harlem on Saturday, Esaw Garner thanked “each and every person that’s out there marching,” referring to nationwide protests that came following the Wednesday announcement that NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo dodged criminal charges.

“Just keep fighting. Keep fighting for what’s right to get justice.”

“My son woke me up out of my sleep and said, ‘Ma, look out the window; there’s like a thousand people on the street,’” she said. “I see all these people and they’re yelling out, ‘Eric Garner,’ and everything and I’m just like overwhelmed.”

Garner, a 43-year-old African-American, died after being placed in the chokehold by Pantaleo on Staten Island in July.

He was suspected of illegally selling cigarettes. The chokehold was captured live on an amateur video. “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Garner said repeatedly as his cries muffled into the pavement.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton praised his forces for their “professionalism” during protests.

“Despite often being confronted by some agitators in the crowd whose only interest is to provoke you, you have displayed professionalism, patience and restraint,” a statement read. “Your conduct has been exemplary.”

In August, another white police officer, Darren Wilson, killed unarmed black man Michael Brown and was later allowed to walk free after a grand jury decision.
