LA activists protest home foreclosures

According to the protesters, thousands of bank-owned foreclosed homes litter Los Angeles neighborhoods which attract crime, decrease property values, and create blight across the populous city in the state of California.

“Crime, prostitution, health and safety violations are all over the place. It is a real dangerous situation,” Jacob Hay, a Good Jobs LA spokesman told Press TV on Wednesday.

Activists called on US authorities to hold accountable the banks which leave the foreclosed properties to fall into disrepair and make them pay for their negligence via enforcing the existing laws.

“When they (banks) take over these homes, they have an obligation to keep them up. Imagine if you are a neighbor of one of these homes, one day there is a family next you, the next day there is a crime house that’s bringing down your property value,” he added.

They went on to say that there are programs in cities of California which have generated millions of dollars in fines and fees levied against absent banks.

Unwilling to pursue the irresponsible banks, Los Angeles city officials say they do not have access to enough inspectors to handle the large amount of foreclosed properties. This is while activists insist that if the city started collecting fines, it could use the additional money to hire more inspectors.
