Labor-Greens alliance working: Tas premier

Tasmanian premier Lara Giddings says her alliance with the Greens is working, but she’ll fight hard for a Labor majority government at the next state election.

Ms Giddings’ comments came as Labor powerbrokers launched an attack on the Greens, describing them as “extremist” and “loopy”.

The parties share power in Tasmania, where two members of cabinet are Greens.

Labor and the Liberals each hold 10 seats in Tasmania’s Legislative Assembly, while the Greens hold five.

“That’s the government that we were provided (with), that’s the government that we’re delivering,” the premier told reporters on Monday.

“And I believe that when you look at what’s happening around Tasmania you’d have to say that we are delivering.”

Ms Giddings pointed to growth in agriculture and mining, including a new $70 million venture at Beaconsfield, as proof the alliance could yield results.

“We’re seeing a lot of activity in a lot of areas across the Tasmanian economy,” she said.

“That’s under this government where we’re working, I believe, in quite well together in promoting Tasmania’s interests in a very difficult global economic time.”

Ms Giddings said discussion of how the Greens would be preferenced at the next federal election was “a little bit premature”, adding the decision would be made on a state-by-state basis.

She said decisions on preferencing for the next state election, due in March 2014, were a matter for the party’s Tasmanian office.

But Ms Giddings said she would take the fight to the Greens when the campaign rolled around.

“I can assure you that we will be campaigning on a Labor government platform,” she said.

“We want to see majority Labor government, I’ve never shied away from that.”

Tasmania’s Liberal opposition said the Labor-Green government had been a failure.

“The simple truth is Labor is captive to the Greens, and Premier Giddings is too weak to do anything about it,” spokesman Jeremy Rockliff said in a statement.

“It’s time for Labor to abandon the Greens, call an election and let the people have their say.”
