‘No scientific support’ to end carbon tax

There is “no scientific support” for the coalition’s plan to repeal the carbon tax, according to one of Australia’s leading coral reef experts.

Speaking at the International Coral Reef Symposium in Cairns on Monday, Professor Terry Hughes launched a consensus statement calling for global action to save the world’s reefs.

The statement, signed by more than 2500 scientists, urges the world’s political leaders to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Professor Hughes said the carbon tax, which came into effect last week, was a step in the right direction.

“Unfortunately, it’s a politically fragile decision because if the opposition is elected at the next election, they’re promising to repeal it,” he told reporters.

“Certainly, there’s no scientific support for Australia going backwards in trying to control its carbon footprint.”
