Cabinet minister Craig Emerson believes it is possible Labor voters who left the party for the Greens might return following the retirement of Bob Brown.
Senator Brown has announced he is leaving parliament in June, handing over the party leadership to his deputy Christine Milne.
“It certainly wouldn’t be a plus for the Greens, having Bob Brown depart,” Dr Emerson told ABC Radio on Monday.
“We will just see how it pans out in what it may or may not do to Labor’s primary vote.”
Dr Emerson stressed the importance of Labor implementing policies that were fundamentally different to the Greens, including returning the budget to surplus.
