Larijani raps US bids to spoil Syria vote

The Western powers seek to vent their frustration over Islamic Awakening in the region on Syria, therefore, they seek to cast doubt on the Syrian vote, Larijani said Wednesday.

He added that the West has targeted Damascus since Syria, unlike many Arab countries, has stood up against Israel.

Iran’s top parliamentarian also criticized certain Arab countries for their stance toward Syria and said those Arab countries that refused to assist Hezbollah during the 33-day war against Israel now claim to be advocates of democracy in Syria.

Larijani said that the US criticism of the referendum was uncalled-for as Syrian people, who are after reforms, took part in a free ballot to vote for a new constitution.

Syria held a landmark referendum on a new constitution on Sunday as part of the government’s plans to implement reforms in the country.

Nearly 89.4 percent of the participants voted in favor of the new constitution, which allows political pluralism and will also enact a presidential limit of two seven-year terms. The constitution is part of the reforms promised by President Bahsar al-Assad.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Sunday’s vote “a cynical ploy.”

“It’s a phony referendum and it is going to be used by Assad to justify what he’s doing to other Syrian citizens,” she said, calling on Syrians who support Assad to turn against him.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
