Legislative candidate killed in Mexico

Guerrero state officials said on Monday that state assembly candidate Margarito Genchi was murdered by several gunmen, who assaulted him at his house in an area east of Acapulco.

Genchi was a member of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He served as mayor of the city of Florencio Villareal from 2005 to 2008.

Investigators have not determined the motive for the murder.

Meanwhile, a supporter of President Felipe Calderon’s National Action Party (PAN) also died on Monday of a gunshot wound in the southern state of Chiapas.

A general election is being held in Mexico on Sunday, July 1, 2012. Voters will go to the polls to elect a new president, 628 members of Congress, and thousands of other officials.

There are 80 million eligible voters in Mexico.
