London hotels fee 3-fold other UK areas

Findings by TripAdvisor accommodation rating website shows a weeklong holiday rental per bedroom in July and August in London costs £711 on the average.

The figure compares to the average cost of a one-week bedroom in Yorkshire at £217, in North Wales at £237, in Cumbria at £242 and in Scottish highlands at £229 (per room).

This comes as London hotels are almost twice as expensive as hotel rooms in Dorset (£389) and in Edinburgh (£370), the second and third most expensive areas in the ranking.

While the high prices in London have been a major repellent for Olympic-time visitors, TripAdvisor has found that London is now even more expensive than foreign resorts, which tourist could choose as alternative destinations to London, in the next two months.

Accommodation for a one-week stay in the Canary Islands, which include Tenerife, costs £281 with hotel rooms in Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and Spain’s Andalucia costing £264 and £274, in that order.

The findings come as the latest figures by Hotels.com from early June show 4,500 London hotel rooms are yet to be sold for the Olympics busiest night on August 4.

It is widely believed that the slow sales are rooted in highly distorted prices that hoteliers are charging for rooms.

The Olympic market has been so slow that Thomas Cook Travel agent, which has official permission to sell tickets to the Games, halved the price of its Olympic ticket and hotel deals last week to boost sales.
