Macklemore Calls Out Big Pharma In New Song ‘Kevin’

Just a couple of days ago I wrote about how Mark Ruffalo used an unexpected opportunity to call out Monsanto’s CEO, Hugh Grant, for leading a company that he feels is “poisoning people.” Now, American rapper Macklemore, best recognized for his hits Thrift Shop and Can’t Hold Us, has used his spotlight to take aim at the pharmaceutical industry.

Macklemore does this through his newest song, Kevin, which tells the story of a young man whose life comes to an end far too soon, thanks in large part to the glaring overprescription problem in the United States. As a recovering addict himself, Macklemore’s lyrics present themselves with incredible realism, a realism that was even more apparent through the passion he sung with at the 2015 American Music Awards.

For a celebration that, in my opinion, is usually overflowing with superficiality, the truth behind the song truly stood out and the reception to it shows promise for a brighter future. Check it out:

While the entire story shared through the lyrics of the song are powerful, there were a couple of parts in particular that stood out to me. The first being:

And now my little brother is in the sky
From a pill that a Doctor prescribed
That a drug dealing billion dollar industry supplied

Rather than delivering a message subliminally, Macklemore opts to speak his opinion directly, calling out the medical industry for being driven by profits versus being driven by our well-being. While there are certainly many well intentioned medical professionals out there who are truly doing what they have been taught to believe is the best approach, the underlying industry has clearly become dysfunctional. (More about this on CE: 1, 2, 3)

Macklemore further elaborates on this when he says:

I blame the pharmacy companies
And country that spends trillions fighting the war they supplying themselves

Both moved by this song, Joe and I from the CE team discussed the track on our newest episode of These Guys, a web series focused on shedding light on a number of important topics weekly. Check it out:

What are your thoughts on the song? Do you feel that Macklemore was out of line by so blatantly casting blame? Or do you feel that more celebrity figures should stand up for what they believe?
