On Sunday, the Majlis (parliament) Industries and Mines Committee discussed the motion asking the government for ship engines “that are capable of travelling long distances without need for refueling.”
Ali Abbaspour, the spokesman for the committee, said the move is in line with creating “a safe ground for stable presence in the distant oceans and coasts.”
The motion will be further discussed by all lawmakers at a future Majlis open session, though no exact date has yet been set.
Experts say the engines to be used could be of nuclear-powered types.
