Obesity increases kidney cancer risk

Based on the number of kidney cancer cases diagnosed in Britain, experts suggest that obesity could increase kidney cancer risk by about 70%, while smoking ups it by about 50%.

They also explained that obesity is fuelling a major increase in the number of other cancers including breast, bowel and womb cancers.

Cancer Research UK has released figures indicating that there are just over 9,000 kidney cancer cases in 2009 compared to less than 2,300 cases in 1975.

Smoking rates in the UK have fallen over the last 35 years, while obesity levels are remarkably rising with nearly 70% of men and almost 60% of women having a BMI of 25 or more.

Blood in the urine can be an early sign of kidney cancer, which is now the eighth most common cancer in the world. If diagnosed early, the disease can often be treated by surgery.

“Too few people know about the significant cancer risks associated with being very overweight,” said director of information at Cancer Research UK Sara Hiom.

“While giving up smoking remains the best way to cut your chances of developing kidney cancer, the importance of keeping a healthy weight shouldn’t be overlooked,” she added.
