‘United States fights proxy war in Syria’

On Sunday, several Persian Gulf Arab states and the United States had pledged 100 million dollars to provide salaries and communications equipment for Syrian rebels fighting against the government.

Syria has been gripped by a year-long unrest which the UN says has taken thousands of lives. Damascus says over two-thousand of its security personnel are among the dead.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Haitham Alsibahie with the Syrian Social Club to further discuss the issue. The following is a transcription of the interview.

Press TV: The decisions and stances adopted at the “Friends of Syria” meeting in Turkey seem in contradiction to the stated goal of the UN and Arab League envoy for a peaceful settlement to the Syrian unrest. That is what Russia has been saying. Kofi Anan has not said his mission has failed. So, what is this meeting aimed at achieving? And how good is it for Syria to have these countries as its friends?

Alsibahie: These countries, let’s not call them the ‘Friends of Syria’, they are the friends of Israel.

Yesterday we had a shambles and different statements from different leaders. Some emotional statements, they are trying to play emotionally on the Syrian people and they call the conference now the friends of the Syrian people.

They have to know from the delusional council, Istanbul council, to the other countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar backed by the United States, the Syrian government and the Syrian state as a whole has stood firm for the last 13 months because of the support of the Syrian people not because of the support of other countries.

Of course, we say there is a support from, and we thank them from Russia, China and Iran, but also the most important is the Syrian people who stood firm behind their government.

Yesterday they tried in different ways. We heard some delusional statements blowing in the air from Nabil al-Arabi.

We heard also the United States does not agree to arm rebels from outside Syria to come in, which we do not believe – this is not the story. The story is the United States does agree but [is] leaving the dirty work to be done by Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They always do the dirty work. This time they are doing the dirty work without getting paid, in fact, they pay for it!

It is a very strange situation but, of course, in Syria everybody is standing firm and we are going to take it to where the reform is going to happen and the dialogue is going to happen.

These people, they mean nothing to the political process in Syria. Syria is dealing with Kofi Annan and we will see what Kofi Annan is coming out with. Kofi Annan has to stick to his six-point which is Syria, cooperating completely with it, and keeping the sovereignty for Syria there.

Press TV: Some Arab countries have decided to pay for the salaries of the armed groups and the US has agreed to send communications equipment to help rebels organize and evade Syria’s military. Do the so-called “Friends of Syria” search for a peaceful solution to the unrest in Syria?

And if Kofi Annan’s plan is to work, I mean when he calls for dialogue, how is that dialogue going to work? If the opposition is at the time being equipped and funded, how can the Syrian government agree to engage into dialogue with that opposition?

Alsibahie: The Syrian government knows very well, and the people in Syria know very well also, that these countries are not a friend and they do not want a political solution. They are pushing for armed rebels and armed uprising, and terrorists coming through the borders. All this has, in the last 13 months, been the case.

Now they are trying to push Mr. Kofi Annan to the front and do the dirty works behind him. These people, the rebels — if you call them rebels — or the gangs who are coming through the borders, and the terrorists who are coming through borders, unless they lay down or they pull out of the border, there will be a Syrian army on the ground and there will be the security service to deal with them.

They dealt with them in the last few months; they broke into groups now, groups of 4 or 5, they are killing here; they are bombing there. But it is the security service that will deal with them, as the army dealt with them today on the border.

If anybody tries to come through that border, we also depend on our army, depend on our security, depend on a right decision from the government to take on these people and teach them a lesson.
