Maldives ex-president officially charged

State Prosecutor, General Ahmed Muizz filed the criminal charge against the former premier and his then Defense Minister Tholhath Ibrahim at the HulhuMale Magistrate Court on Sunday.

Nasheed ordered the military to arrest the chief judge of the country’s criminal court in January, accusing him of political bias and corruption.

The secret arrest triggered three weeks of opposition-led protests boiled over into a police mutiny.

The first democratically-elected president handed power to his Vice President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik on Feb 7.

Nasheed later said that he was ousted in a military-backed coup and called for an independent investigation into an alleged coup that toppled him.

The new government denies the coup claims and insists Nasheed stepped down voluntarily.

Hassan says he will hold elections in July 2013, the earliest time permitted by the constitution.

Nasheed took office in 2008 and pledged to bring full democracy to the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Charges against Nasheed carry a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment or banishment to a remote island.
