Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed resigns in stunning fall from grace

President Nasheed handed over power to Vice-President Mohamed Waheed Hassan
Manik, saying continuing in power would result in his having to use force
against his people.

“I don’t want to hurt any Maldivian,” Mr Nasheed said.

“I resign because I am not a person who wishes to rule with the use of power,”
he continued in a televised address. “I believe that if the government were
to remain in power it would require the use force which would harm many
citizens.”

His ousting is a setback for the country’s fragile democracy and comes just
three years after he won a sweeping election victory in 2008.

He came to power with pledges to further democratise the tropical resort
nation but has clashed with a leading judge amid allegations that his
predecessor, the dictatorial former President Abdul Gayoom who had ruled for
more than three decades, was plotting his downfall.

Mr Hassan, the vice president, has previously worked for the United Nations,
including as the head of its children’s fund in Afghanistan.
