Maldives president reneges on deal for early elections

But in an exclusive interview with the Daily Telegraph during his visit to New
Delhi on Sunday, President Waheed said there will be no early elections and
the poll will take place next year instead.

He said the other party leaders had said because the country’s constitution
requires elections at fixed intervals, an early vote would mean two being
held in the space of just over a year.

“All the political party leaders agreed to hold talks on early elections
but we could not agree a date,” he said. “Some of them said we
needed a constitutional amendment, another election would cost $5.1 million.
Then besides the financial problem we would need two elections.”

Mr Nasheed said in a visit to New Delhi last month he feared any delay in the
promised early elections would be used to rig the election against him and
his party.

Dr Waheed said he had not supported President Nasheed when his security forces
revolted because relations between them had already broken down.

During his presidency, Mr Nasheed had been disrespectful to him, put some of
the cabinet ministers from his party under pressure to defect to his MDP,
and had excluded him from major decisions.

He had also opposed President Nasheed’s use of the military to arrest the
country’s chief justice who had resisted moves to replace him.

He dismissed Mr Nasheed’s claims that he was ousted in a coup.

“The president is not a shy person, he’s media savvy, a former
journalist. He wrote his own resignation letter. He had his cabinet behind
him. He could have said he was being forced to resign, or indicate he was
under duress to resign. Why did he take 24 hours to change his story?”
he asked.

He said he had however agreed to replace some members of an inquiry into the
circumstances of Mr Nasheed’s resignation and change its terms of references
following objections from the former president. Its findings are expected in
July.
