Man in critical condition after being shot in head

POLICE say a man shot in the head last night was known to them but it was too early to say if he was the target of an attack.

Police and ambulance were called to a house on French Street, Maroubra at about 5.45pm yesterday, where they found the 43-year-old man in the ”granny flat” of the property.

He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition last night.

The commander of the eastern beaches, Superintendent Gavin Dengate, said the man was known to police but it was too early to say if he was the target of an attack. ”That will take us a number of days to track back through his past,” he said.

Police were speaking to a number of people in an attempt to find out what happened.

Strike Force Abdure, comprising Maroubra and inner city detectives, as well as the Homocide Squad, has been set up to investigate the incident.

”We will be thoroughly examining the location, certainly we’ll be conducting canvases and making inquiries with hospitals and the like,” Superintendent Dengate said.

The police commander sought to assure residents the incident was likely to be a one-off. ”We are not saying this has any form of linkages at this stage,” he said.

”This is a very quiet area of Maroubra, particularly this street. We haven’t certainly been called down here for any issues in the recent times.”
