Transcript

TONY JONES, PRESENTER: South Australia’s long-serving premier, Mike Rann, is officially calling it a day, handing over the top job to the current Education minister, Jay Weatherill. Mike Rann says he leaves after almost 10 years with no regrets and it’ll be up to the public to judge his legacy.

Nick Harmsen reports from Adelaide.

NICK HARMSEN, REPORTER: The party’s over for Mike Rann, a 17-year political leadership brought to an end at a gala film studio opening.

The Premier also found an audience in the Parliament.

MIKE RANN, SA PREMIER: Personally, I leave in good spirits and with malice towards none.

NICK HARMSEN: Mr Rann has repeatedly lashed out at the factional play that brought about his downfall, but today was reserved for thanks to his family, staff and voters.

MIKE RANN: Most of all I want to thank the people of South Australia for their support.

NICK HARMSEN: There was also praise for his former deputy, a political partner who helped deliver three election victories.

Kevin Foley will depart the ministry in typical style.

KEVIN FOLEY, POLICE MINISTER: I lay on the table the annual report 2010-11 for the witness protection program and advise the House at the end of Question Time I’ll be entering the program.

NICK HARMSEN: There was laughter and the odd tear as both men found different ways to say goodbye.

MIKE RANN (on radio show): Adios, Adelaide. Arrivederci. Hasta la vista, baby.

NICK HARMSEN: Mike Rann’s replacement Jay Weatherill is preparing to say hello, finalising a ministry expected to deliver at least one surprise. Outspoken Weatherill supporter Leon Bignell is likely to be overlooked, with Upper House MP Ian Hunter promoted instead.

JAY WEATHERILL, PREMIER-IN-WAITING: Well, look, that’s a matter for caucus tomorrow. Caucus is meeting on Friday morning and all will be revealed.

NICK HARMSEN: For today, Labor was happy to indulge its long-time figurehead.

LABOR POLITICIAN: You just want to leave the place better than you found it, and he can say that.

GRACE PORTOLESI, MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS MINISTER: Absolutely should be very proud of his achievements.

NICK HARMSEN: He may have set the state’s course, but in the end Mike Rann’s departure was faster than he liked.

MIKE RANN: I leave here as Premier with no regrets whatsoever.

NICK HARMSEN: Both he and Kevin Foley will resign from their ministries in the morning and from Parliament by early next year.
