Argentine police are searching for the attacker of an Australian tourist who was found alive three days after she disappeared on a nature trail.

A close friend told media the 23-year-old woman was recovering in a hospital and out of danger. But she was dehydrated and disoriented, and showed obvious signs of having been attacked while hiking in a canyon near the town of El Bolson in the Argentine Andes.

Bruno Meister said he and other Argentine friends warned her not to go hiking alone, but she insisted.

Police are searching for someone who apparently attacked her after they met up on the Cajon del Azul trail.

The Perth woman was reported missing on December 26, after she failed to return from her mountain trek, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement on Friday.

“Australian consular officers in Buenos Aires have provided consular assistance to the woman and will continue to do so,” a DFAT spokeswoman said.

Australian consular officers in Canberra are in contact with her family in Australia.

The woman, who has not been named by DFAT, was said to have gone without water, food and warm clothing during her ordeal.

Local news outlets reported she had also been attacked.
