Detectives in Broome are trying to determine why a 61-year-old man was kidnapped and attacked by three men at the weekend.

The man was in his van at an information bay on Saturday morning when he was approached by three men who hit him with a metal object repeatedly.

The victim was then pushed onto the floor of his own white Ford Transit van and driven to a semi-rural property at Twelve Mile Estate.

He was bashed again and forced into a chair before being doused with petrol.

Police say the attackers lit a fire only metres from where the victim was sitting.

It was at this point he managed to talk one of the men into letting him go.

The victim then ran to a nearby property, locked himself inside armed with a pitchfork and a knife, and rang police.

He has been flown to Perth with life-threatening injuries, including a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.

He has been unable to confirm whether he knew his attackers.

Detective First Class Constable Blair Smith says the victim is still too unwell to remember what happened.

“The victim’s obviously in Royal Perth Hospital with a head injury so his recollection of events is quite unclear,” he said.

“Perth will interview him later today or tomorrow and hopefully he can remember a lot more of the incident.”

Detectives have not yet released details on whether the man was a local or a visitor to Broome.

They have interviewed three men over the attack but no charges have been laid.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
