Man self-immolates, dies in Senegal

According to reports by local media, the incident occurred on Monday when the 32-year-old man, identified as Cheikh Mbaye, doused himself in flammable liquid and then set himself on fire.

He was transferred to Dakar’s main hospital and died early Tuesday from third-degree burns.

Local sources further said that his burial was set to take place later Tuesday in the capital.

Local media also quoted Mbaye as saying that life was better during the ex-President Abdoulaye Wade’s office. Wade did not succeed in securing a third consecutive term in the West African nation’s 2012 presidential election.

Meanwhile, in February 2011 two Senegalese lost their lives after setting themselves on fire in a country that suffers from soaring unemployment and an increasing cost of living.

The deadly events in Senegal are reminiscent of the death of the Tunisian man, Mohammed Bouazizi on December 17, 2010. Bouazizi was an unemployed young man frustrated with poverty and financial problems who set himself ablaze.

Bouazizi’s death sparked mass protests, which finally caused a popular revolution in Tunisia, leading to the ouster of President Zine El Abidin Ben Ali in January 2011.
