Man self-immolates outside Breivik trial

Police officials said the man, described as a Norwegian citizen of foreign origin, tried to enter the building, having set himself on fire outside the court’s building in Oslo on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

The officials said he was overpowered by security and police personnel at the entrance.

“There were police officers on site and the fire was put out quickly,” police operations leader Finn Belle said, adding, “The man received burn injuries and was transported to Oslo University Hospital.”

Norwegian newspaper VG posted a video of the incident on its website. The footage shows a man running towards the police outside the courthouse, with flames shooting up from his sweater and hat, and shouting, “Shoot me! Shoot me, it hurts.”

It was not immediately clear what the man’s motive was or whether his actions were connected to Breivik’s trial.

Breivik faces terrorism and premeditated murder charges for detonating a car bomb that killed eight people outside the government headquarters in Oslo and then killing 69 people in a shooting rampage at the Labor Party’s annual youth camp on the island of Utoya in the south.

He has boasted that the killings were necessary and a part of, what he has described as, a crusade against Islamization of Europe.

The bloodshed marked Norway’s worst peacetime massacre since World War II.
