Massive Earthquake in Afghanistan – Pakistan: Over 338 fatalities, thousands injured

nsnbc : A massive earthquake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale rocked the Hindukush region. The quake has caused at least 338 fatalities and injured thousands. The casualty number is likely to rise as Search And Rescue (SAR) teams struggle to reach isolated villages. The quake was felt throughout the region, including India and Kazakhstan.

Kashmir Earthquake_Pakistan_India_2015The magnitude 7.5 earthquake began rocking the region at  13:39 local time. The quake’s hypocenter (depth) was at 212 km below the ground. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 45km North of Alaqahdari-ye Kiran wa Munjan, 48km SSW of Jarm, 76km South of Fayzabad, 77km of Ashkasham, and 254km NNE of Kabul, Afghanistan.

The earthquake destroyed infrastructure including roads and bridges throughout the region. Rescue efforts are further complicated due to the high risk of landslides.

Thousands of people had to spend the night outdoor in near-freezing temperatures because their home was damaged or out of fear for aftershocks, landslides or other calamities.

An official from Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, Latif ur Rehman, told the press from the city of Peshawar, that Pakistani civilian and military authorities dispatched several helicopters to affected areas to assess damage and to run rescue operations.

Afghanistan Earthquake_2015Even though the epicenter of the quake was in Afghanistan it could be felt hundreds of kilometers away, including the Indian capital New Delhi and in Kazakhstan.

Reports from Afghanistan state that rescue teams under the control of the government have no access to Taliban-controlled areas. It was at the present time impossible to independently verify the veracity of these reports.

The number of dead and injured could rise significantly over the coming days. For one, because chances of survival of those trapped in ruins of collapsed buildings are falling by the hour.

For the other, because the quake has destroyed communication infrastructure, making it difficult if not impossible to communicate with isolated villages, and making it impossible for authorities to keep the numbers updated.

Earthquake Report notes that based on the current, biased data, the death toll is likely to be somewhere between 500 and 1,000. Regular updates on the latest developments will be posted on Earthquake-Report.com.
