Firefighters had to cut the cyclist’s bike to free him from under the train in Williamstown.

A cyclist is in hospital with life threatening injuries after being hit by a train and dragged underneath the carriage in Melbourne’s west.

Police say the 28-year-old man was riding through a pedestrian crossing against warnings when the north-bound train hit him at the North Williamstown railway station just after 7:00pm (AEST) last night.

Paramedics say the unconscious man was trapped under the train for almost an hour after being dragged some distance.

They had to crawl under the train to treat the cyclist, who was eventually freed by firefighters.

He is being treated in the Alfred Hospital for critical head and chest injuries.
