LESS than a month after it said it would slash more than 500 engineering jobs at its Tullamarine and Avalon bases, Qantas has said it will now employ 72 new Melbourne maintenance staff.

But the gains for Melbourne are Sydney’s loss: 108 maintenance jobs will go in New South Wales.

Qantas Domestic chief executive Lyell Strambi said the consolidation of component maintenance that would lead to the net loss of 36 jobs, and movement of the maintenance positions to Melbourne, would create efficiencies and improve productivity.

Unions yesterday questioned whether there was any long-term strategy at Qantas in place at all, because the job cuts in Sydney followed so closely on the loss of hundreds of positions in Victoria.
