Melbourne’s west hit by hailstones, but new Year’s Eve is looking hot

HAILSTONES the size of lemons have been reported in Melbourne’s west as the weather bureau forecasts very dangerous thunderstorms to strike Melbourne later on Christmas Day.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Claire Yeo says parts of Melbourne face flash-flooding along with large hailstones as the bad weather crosses the city.

She says people have phoned the bureau reporting hailstones 4cm in diameter hitting Melton, on Melbourne’s western fringes.

The bureau has forecast very dangerous thunderstorms around Melbourne Airport and surrounding suburbs with severe thunderstorms in other parts of the city being accompanied by destructive winds, very heavy rainfall and hail, and flash flooding.

But the storms are expected to pass during the night and Ms Yeo says finer conditions will prevail for the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India at the MCG.

SES spokesman Lachlan Quick urged people to vigilant travelling to and from Christmas engagements.

”We urge people if they’re going to be on the road to be aware there probably going to some flash flooding in the areas to be hit by the thunderstorm,” Mr Quick said.

South-east moving thunderstorms were detected on the western metropolitan fringe at 3.05pm (AEST) and are predicted to affect much of the city.

The SES has advised people to keep clear of fallen power lines, keep away from creeks and drains, and to stay indoors if possible.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued severe weather warnings for Horsham, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Seymour, as well as other locations around the state over the next few hours.

In contrast, revellers could be sweating it up into 2012 with searing conditions forecast for New Year’s Eve.

The mercury will reach 39C in the state’s north, while the temperature in Melbourne is set to soar to 32C as end-of-year celebrations come to a peak.
