‘Mideast chaos boosts Israel security’

“That is the primary concern. The security of Israel is paramount to Western powers and that is why it is important to weaken any power [in the region],” said Omar Nashabe, the journalist with the Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper.

The US intelligence agency tries to spread sectarian conflicts in the region because it would “weaken Syria, and it would weaken any potential force that could threaten the security of Israel,” Nashabe stated in an interview with Press TV on Saturday.

“Syria is one of those powers that [has] supported the resistance (against Israel) all along.”

Meanwhile, Israeli President Shimon Peres on Sunday expressed support for the rebels fighting against the Syrian government.

The Israeli president said he hoped that the “rebels who expose themselves to live fire… will win.”

His remarks came at a time when some Western governments have called for the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On June 3, Assad said in a televised address to the parliament that Syria is “facing a war from abroad.”

He also stated that the political process in the country is “moving forward, yet terrorism is not going down.”

“Terrorists are not interested in dialogue or reform,” he added.

“Standing up against the conspiracy is not easy, but we will overcome the obstacles,” the Syrian president said.
