Mind How You Go, Sir

In the west we tend to be self-delusional about the authority of the police, their purpose and methodology. We are conditioned to think ‘policing by consent’ underscores the policeman’s role. It is ~ as long as you play by their rules.

The constable’s ‘goodnight, mind how you go, sir’ is the stuff of 1950s movie myth. Wonderful PR, but one of the early lessons I learned from mother was to never trust a policeman. She fervently believed they would arrest their own grandmother. Her doom laden words seemed to be an exaggeration, but life taught me that her advice was based on experience.

The policeman has only one master. This master is the law and it is the State, not the people that makes the law. Wherever in the world you find yourself the policeman’s mindset is defined not by his nationality or race, but by his unquestioning obedience and readiness to uphold the authority of the State. No state will employ individuals who think for themselves.

To say that only the uniform separates the cop from an occupying soldier is wishful thinking. If in doubt it is more prudent to approach the latter than the former. Soldiers, especially those conscripted, hang on to vestiges of humanity. This quality is drained out of policeman during training.

From my ship’s deck I watched a straggling column of prisoners picking up discarded litter along the South African port’s wharfs. European officers assisted by native officers were in charge of prisoner discipline. Suddenly there was a scuffling as a prisoner darted out to retrieve food tossed from the ship’s deck. It was the column’s White officers who saved the culprit from being beaten half to death by uniformed compatriots zealously intent on ingratiating themselves with their overseers.

Paedophiles are drawn to careers that involve children whilst those inclined towards fraud opt for financial services. The brute, a coward by nature, gravitates not towards the armed forces where he might meet serious challenge, but to policing a disarmed civilian population. Central to his thinking is that his uniform gives him much immunity from the laws he insists others obey. Again, like pack animals the police will form a cordon around a colleague if the latter is threatened.

We are accustomed to video images of extremes of police brutality where violence against a defenceless victim is gratuitous. It is not a race issue, as policemen are colour-blind. However, the policeman is acutely aware that he faces greater censure should he behave inappropriately towards a non-White. For this reason the White policeman prefers beating shit out of someone who could be his own daughter or father.

We often see a videoed squad of policemen cudgeling and kicking a cowering victim whose only protection is to cower in foetal position. The police, protected by riot-gear that would credit a sci-fi movie, relish opportunity to beat senseless a frightened lightly-dressed teenager.

In Soviet Occupied Europe each nation’s native-born police enthusiastically did as their commissars wished them too. Do you really believe British or American police would be less state servile? In Germany and Britain the state police deal far more harshly with anti-immigrant protestors than they do with an alien community that is also responsible for a disproportionate level of crime. I rest my case, your honour.

Mike Walsh is author of Europe Arise in which a chapter deals with protection from state police.
