Minister denies ban on talking to journos

Federal Labor MP Anthony Albanese says he’s “bemused” by reports the prime minister has ordered cabinet ministers to stop talking to newspapers in a bid to stamp out leadership speculation.

“I did see today’s report and was rather bemused by it,” the Federal Transport Minister told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

Mr Albanese said it was “business as usual” and it was common knowledge that cabinet ministers co-ordinated their media engagements.

However, he denied speculation that ministers had been issued gag orders.

“Today’s report is a report about nothing,” he said.

His comments come after News Limited reported on Friday that federal Labor ministers must now seek express permission from Julia Gillard’s office before meeting or having private talks with the editors of major newspapers.

The gagging order, which seeks to stamp out rampant media speculation about a leadership challenge from Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, was reportedly issued in cabinet last week.

Mr Albanese said he had attended two media conferences on Friday morning and had been followed around by cameras since 9.15am (AEDT).

He flatly denied that briefings for journalists were a problem the government was trying to stop.
