Toddler dies after being hit by two cars

UPDATE

Queensland police are urging parents to lock their house doors after a wandering toddler died after being struck by two cars in Cairns.

The three-year-old boy was hit after straying from his home in the Cairns suburb of Bayview Heights last night.

He was rushed to Cairns Base Hospital but could not be saved.

Sergeant Cary Coolican told ABC radio the boy might have escaped his home through a door that had not been closed properly.

“It’s just probably a timely reminder that everyone with little kids should be taking extra care and precautions and making sure that they are secure in their homes as well,” she said.

Sgt Coolican said the boy’s family was devastated.

Investigations into the accident are continuing.

Meanwhile, a teenage girl was killed after a car in which she was a passenger collided with oncoming traffic and then a truck travelling south near Rockhampton about midday yesterday.

Five other people were injured in the collision, but none seriously.
