Minor flooding on NSW south coast

Residents of the NSW south coast town have been put on flood alert as the Shoalhaven River rises throughout the night.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts minor flooding of the river around Nowra, when it peaks at 2.3 metres at 11pm (AEDT) on Thursday.

Nowra has been inundated with rain over the past 24 hours as storms rolled through Sydney and parts of the NSW coast.

Early Thursday morning, a police officer was lucky to escape serious injury after plunging 30 metres down the side of a mountain while helping the SES deal with a fallen tree.

Nowra homes, farms and camping grounds near the Shoalhaven River are expected to experience some flooding, along with the Nowra Golf Club, as water flows from the river on Thursday night.

NSW State Emergency Services is advising residents in the area not to drive through floodwaters.
