‘Missile shield excuse for US presence’

Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan made the remarks on Wednesday night in a ceremony to mark the Army Day in the Iranian capital, Tehran, IRNA reported.

He said that Washington’s unilateral policies and its blatant and hidden interference in different parts of the world, including a proposed plan for the establishment of a missile defense shield in the region, have provoked a crisis.

Brig. Gen. Pourdastan said that US attempts to spread Iranophobia accounted for Washington’s large arms sales to regional countries and its military presence in the region.

The top Iranian commander said that Iranophobia policy is a propaganda campaign and a psychological warfare by the US and certain European countries, describing it as synonymous with Islamophobia policy pursued by the US governments over the years.

Pourdastan said that Iran plays a constructive role in establishing security in the region and added that the regional countries are fully capable of safeguarding their interests without resorting to foreign assistance.

History shows that problems in the Middle East are imposed by outside powers, Pourdastan said, adding that reliable evidence available shows that the US and its allies have planned extensive schemes for regional countries to undermine regional stability.

In March, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held talks in Saudi Arabia about plans for a Persian Gulf missile shield system to counter what she described as potential threats from Iran.

She said in an address to a [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council-US Strategic Cooperation Forum in Riyadh that Washington was aiming for “practical and specific steps to strengthen our mutual security, such as helping our militaries improve interoperability, cooperate on maritime security and missile defense, and coordinate responses to crises.”

Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed that Tehran follows a defense doctrine, which is based on deterrence, and have pointed out that the Islamic Republic poses no threat to any regional countries.
