Mixed 2012-13 Budget reaction on mid north coast

Lyne Independent Rob Oakeshott is calling on the federal and New South Wales governments not to make the Pacific Highway a ‘political football’.

The Treasurer Wayne Swan’s 5th budget has spending of over three and a half billion dollars for the highway upgrade if the state matches it.

Mr Oakeshott says the highway agreement has always been a 50-50 split.

He says everyone on the north coast just wants the highway project finished.

“The fact that the federal government now has tipped $3.5 billion over the next four years, to get this job done by 2016,” Mr Oakeshott said.

” I would hope is an opportunity for NSW not a threat.

“An opportunity for the likes of Andrew Stoner, Leslie Williams, Andrew Fraser, all these north coast state MPs, who’ve banged this drum for many years, let’s get the job done.”

The Nationals MP for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker says the budget is not good news for the Pacific Highway or for north coast residents.

“The highway is far too an important project for the north coast to basically have as a conditional item in the budget,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“There needs to be an unconditional commitment of these funds to the highway.

“The accident record is tragic as everyone knows and those funds are urgently needed and should be unconditionally committed to the road.”

The head of the state’s Local Government Association says the conditional funding for the highway upgrade is not fair.

Keith Rhodes is also the mayor of Coffs Harbour and a member of the Pacific Highway Taskforce.

He says the Commonwealth should pay the ‘lion’s share’ of the highway upgrading.

“The Pacific highway is a national highway,” Cr Rhoades said.

“The federal government has always recognised it as being a state responsibility highway.

“But it is the major link connecting Sydney and Brisbane.

“Now we have the federal government that funds the Hume, the Newell and all of these 100 per cent because they’re national highways.

“But for some reason the poor Pacific has never been declared that way, and it should have been many years ago.”
