In one of the most notorious aerial jail breaks, a trio of IRA men were sprung
by a comrade in a hijacked helicopter in 1973 from the yard of Dublin’s
Mountjoy Prison. The Republican band, the Wolfe Tones, recorded a song about
it, which included the line: “It’s up like a bird and it’s over the
city, ‘Three men are missing’ I heard the warder cry.” Shestakov’s two
accomplices are still on the run.
