The RAC rescue helicopter was sent out but then recalled when the fatalities were confirmed.

The national road toll has risen to 30 after two people were killed in a crash in Western Australia.

The accident occurred when two cars, which were travelling in the same direction, collided at Kendenup, 350 kilometres south-east of Perth.

Police say the crash sent one car off the road and down a steep embankment where it hit a large tree.

The 87-year-old driver and his 86-year-old wife were killed.

The accident happened on the Albany Highway just before 10:30am (local time).

Fire and rescue crews were called out from Mount Barker and Albany, while the rescue helicopter was also dispatched but was recalled after the fatalities were confirmed.

The highway was closed in both directions around the crash site for some hours.

The deaths brings Western Australia’s holiday road toll to four.

In New South Wales the number of road deaths stands at 12, while six people have died in Queensland, five in Victoria, two in South Australia and one in the Northern Territory.

There have been no fatalities in Tasmania or the ACT.

The latest death in NSW occurred when a car veered off the road and hit a tree, bursting into flames, at Ladysmith near Wagga Wagga.

Police are yet to identify the driver.
