New fraud claims against Thomson

Mr Thomson’s vote will be crucial to the minority Labor Government’s ability to get its legislation passed.

A pair from the Opposition will match Mr Thomson’s absence if he needs to attend the birth of his child.

”If Mr Thomson wants a brief absence from the Parliament for the birth of his child, obviously the Coalition will provide that,” Mr Abbott said.

Government minister Anthony Albanese said he was pleased the Opposition had shown some decency towards Mr Thomson, but that it was acting like a ”quasi police force” in relation to the allegations.

”It’s important in this country we have a separation of the political process from the judicial process,” Mr Albanese said.

”It’s important that parliamentarians respect that, and I intend to respect that.

”I’m not a police officer. Those matters are a matter for them to conduct, and I think it’s a really good idea that politicians don’t pretend that they’re some quasi police force.

”What we saw is Mr Brandis make all sorts of assertions just a week ago and the police reject those.”
