New York hedge fund manager drops $1m shoe collection case

Wearing a pair of $700 Yves St. Laurent high heels, she said: “It really
was a sickness, it was like a disease.

“There was such a lack of emotion and love in my relationship that I was
filling that void with shopping. I was shopping endlessly, I couldn’t stop.

“I wanted love and emotional support and affection but there was nothing.
I tried to keep track of what I was buying but I lost control.”

She appeared to blame her uncontrollable urge to buy shoes on her husband’s
apparent lack of affection, adding: “He would always say ‘I’m busy.
Leave me alone. Just go shopping or something.’ And I would give in and just
go do it.” It is estimated that Mrs Shak, a professional poker player,
has a collection of 1,200 pairs of shoes including 700 pairs of Louboutins,
costing between $700 to $4,000.

She also owns a pair of black and white cowboy boots once owned by Elizabeth
Taylor which she keeps in a glass cabinet.

The couple separated in 2009. But only later, Mr Shak claimed, did he discover
the shoe collection.

The lawsuit stated: “In the summer of 2011, Daniel became aware that Beth
owned and failed to disclose an extensive collection of Christian Louboutin
shoes and other high-end designer shoes.

“Dan trusted his wife and was not inspecting his home to try to find
inventory or ‘secret rooms’. The collection is indeed vast and includes 700
pairs of Louboutins, costing from $700 to $4,000.” On Tuesday Mr Shak,
who runs SHK Asset Management in New York, dropped the lawsuit on the first
day in court.

Mrs Shak now lives in a new home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which has two
separate rooms to hold her shoes, both of which can only be entered using a
numerical keypad.
