The popularity of Liberal National Party (LNP) candidate Campbell Newman in the key Brisbane seat of Ashgrove has fallen in the latest poll.

The poll found Mr Newman’s popularity has fallen by 3.8 per cent since last month.

In the two-party preferred option, Mr Newman polled at 51 per cent and sitting Labor MP, Kate Jones, at 49 per cent.

However, the survey found the LNP continues to lead in the seat with 49.2 per cent, despite Labor gaining 3.4 percentage points in the primary vote.

Mr Newman still leads by eight points, but his primary vote has dropped below 50 per cent for the first time in six ReachTEL polls.

The survey of 616 people was conducted in the electorate last night.

ReachTEL spokesman James Stewart says based on the poll, Mr Newman would still win the seat although he has lose ground.

“[Mr Newman’s] now down for the first time below 50 per cent of the primary vote – that’s a big drop,” he said.

The LNP made an unprecedented move in choosing Mr Newman as the party leader while he is not a sitting Member of Parliament.

There could be problems for the LNP if it wins the election but Mr Newman fails to win the Ashgrove seat.

Ms Jones says she is encouraged by the poll, but there is a long way to go in the state election campaign.

“Obviously today’s polls are encouraging but I know that this is a long, tough road and it’ll go right down to the wire on election day,” she said.

“It is very clear that the people of Ashgrove in this electorate are thinking twice about Campbell Newman.

“Campbell Newman is more interested in power than representing our local community.”

Opposition Leader Jeff Seeney also says it will be a tough fight.

“I’m very concerned that people have lost sight of the fact that there is a long battle ahead,” he said.

“It’s a six-week campaign to get rid of a Government that’s failed – failed Queenslanders, failed the health system, failed our nurses.

“The only way we’re going to get rid of that Government is to fight every day for the next six weeks to ensure we do have a government that can deliver for Queenslanders.”

Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser says the poll shows Mr Seeney could be the next Premier of Queensland.

“There’s a clear trend in this poll over the last six months that shows there’s a real risk that the LNP could win the next election and Jeff Seeney will be the Premier of Queensland,” he said.

“What this poll shows is that the more people see of Campbell Newman in the electorate where he’s working the most – Ashgrove – the less they like of him.

“That means there’s a real chance that Jeff Seeney will be the Premier of Queensland on March 25.”

But Mr Seeney says it is not an option for him to be the next Premier.

“There is a choice of two people for Premier – one is Anna Bligh and the other is Campbell Newman,” he said.

“One of those two people will be Premier after the next election.

“It’s up to the people of Queensland to choose whether they want more of Anna Bligh and her Governments failings or Campbell Newman and a new Government that can deliver a lower cost of living.”

The state election will be held on March 24.
