North Korea rocket launch: timeline

Late 2002 – North Korea ejects inspectors from the International Atomic
Energy Agency.

April 10, 2003 – North Korea becomes first nation to withdraw from the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

February 10, 2005 – North Korea publicly declares it has nuclear
weapons.

September 19, 2005 – North Korea agrees to scrap all existing nuclear
weapons and nuclear production facilities, rejoin the NPT and allow IAEA
inspectors to return.

July 5, 2006 – Seven missiles are fired in two tests, one of which
failed after 42 seconds.

October 9, 2006 – North Korea detonates a nuclear device with an
estimated explosive force of less than one kiloton. China, which had
reportedly attempted to convince the regime not to go ahead with the test,
was given a 20-minute warning and flashed an emergency alert to Washington.

April 5, 2009 – North Korea launches an Unha-2 rocket carrying what it
claims is the Bright Star 2 satellite into orbit. South Korea and the US
state that the launch is a test of a ballistic missile. International space
monitoring agencies can find no trace of the satellite and conclude it fell
into the Pacific Ocean.

May 25, 2009 – North Korea detonates a second nuclear device and
launches a number of short-range surface-to-air missiles to worldwide
condemnation.

July 4, 2009 – North Korea fires seven short-range missiles into the
Sea of Japan, in violation of UN resolutions.

March 16, 2012 – North Korea declares it will launch a rocket carrying
the Bright Star 3 satellite into orbit sometime between April 12 and April
15 as part of its celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of
Kim Il-sung.

March 18, 2012 – South Korea says the launch is a “grave
provocation” designed to help the regime develop a long-range ballistic
missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead. Washington concurs that the
launch is a masked missile test.
