President Obama spoke at General Electric (GE) Waukesha gas engine plant as part of a 4 part tour to promote his new vision for the new Middle Class.
The president rallied over 400 people, saying that the US must have “even more qualified workers to fill a growing manufacturing need.”
Obama said: “The first thing is, let’s create more new jobs. Number two, we’ve got to train Americans with the skills to fill those jobs. Americans like Reggie, we’ve got to get them ready to take those jobs.”
Hitting the point home, Obama said tongue-in-cheek: “Now, nothing wrong with an art history degree — I love art history. . . I’m just saying you can make a really good living and have a great career without getting a four-year college education as long as you get the skills and the training that you need.”
Executives at GE have outlined their employment needs to continue to manufacture engines that will facilitate more petrol and natural gas extraction across the country.
Workers “who are specifically trained” must have extensive background knowledge with an expertise in technical skills.
Obama signed a presidential memorandum (PM) empowering Vice President Joe Biden to lead a review ensuring Americans will be able to retain their Middle Class status, and to work with cities, businesses and labor leaders to better match training to employer needs.”
The president stressed: “Not all of today’s good jobs need a four-year degree. But the ones that don’t need a college degree do need some specialized training.”
Findings of this new oversight board headed by Biden will then funnel into a competition to grant $500 million to existing funds in order to match colleges with industry.
Obama chided: “There are a lot of folks who do not have time to wait for Congress. They need to learn new skills right now to get a new job right now.”
Obama signed a PM “Job Driven Training for Workers” empowering the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of Education to give “workers the opportunity to acquire the skills that they need to pursue in-demand jobs and careers is critical to growing our economy, ensuring that everyone who works hard is rewarded, and building a strong middle class.”
This directive outlines how government programs and funding to ensure Americans are skilled at their current jobs; while investing in skill-orientated education for the next generation.
Obama wrote: “It is critical that the Federal Government ensure that its policies and programs in the workforce and training system are designed to equip the Nation’s workers with skills matching the needs of employers looking to hire. To achieve this goal, employers must identify the skills and credentials required for in-demand jobs and help develop training programs; workers and job seekers must have access to education and training that meets their unique needs and the requirements for good jobs and careers; and employers must have easy ways to find workers who have or can acquire those skills. We must take steps to ensure that all relevant Federal programs follow such a job-driven approach to training, and that these programs are accountable for getting Americans into good jobs and careers as quickly as possible.”
